Theme: “Trends in Emerging Viruses”

Viruses are submicroscopic, parasitic particles in most cases possessing the genetic material either DNA or RNA that are very much capable in producing deadly diseases that may spread from individual to individual and can be fatal. After modest beginnings and many years of empirical approach, the study of viruses is evolving into a field of rational and quantitative research, thanks to ever improving tools and techniques. The rather slow advancements in the field of Virology is not surprising, since the largest viruses infecting human measure no more than 1/5,000 of a millimeter and some are as small as 1/50,000 of a millimeter, while the greatest magnification afforded by optical microscopes is of the order of 2,000 times.

Pakistan is already suffering from a lot of life taking viral diseases such as hepatitis B and C viruses. More than 10 million people are infected by HCV in Pakistan, the number which is second most number in the world after Egypt. Human immunodeficiency virus is also rapidly spreading in Pakistan and causing AIDS in number of people. Upto 2015, there were 94000 cases of HIV in Pakistan. The main reason of its rapid spread is unawareness among the general population. Most recently, Pakistan has faced outbreaks of newly emerging viruses such as dengue virus during the last couple of years and swine flu this year. Therefore collaborative research, international conferences and institutional scientific collaborations in this field is a national demand.

Let’s join hands at the research/academic level in order to control these deadly viruses by collaborating with each other.
